Lice Help & Advice

What to Do If You Mixed Lice Treatments in Your Hair

You tried the shampoo. Then vinegar. Maybe conditioner. Possibly something else. Now you're not sure what's in your child's hair — or whether any of it worked. Here's exactly what to do next.

First Things First

Take a Breath — You Haven't Made Things Worse

Parents in a panic try everything they can get their hands on — sometimes all at once. Lice shampoo, vinegar, conditioner, home remedies. If that's you, you are not alone, and you have not caused any harm. But there are some important things to understand before you do anything else.

The most important thing right now is to stop adding more products to the hair. More product means more residue, and residue is the main thing that will get in the way of effective treatment.

Why It Didn't Work

Why Mixing Treatments Usually Means the Lice Are Still There

Most over-the-counter lice treatments use pesticides that lice have already developed resistance to. They were unreliable to begin with — and combining them with home remedies like vinegar or conditioner does not make them more effective.

Here's the real problem that most people don't realize:

⚠️ None of these products reliably remove nits from the hair shaft.
⚠️ Nits hatch within about 8–9 days after being laid.
⚠️ Even if something affected live lice, the eggs are still there.
⚠️ Once those eggs hatch, the infestation starts all over again.

So if you've mixed treatments and still feel unsure whether it worked, trust that instinct. The lice are very likely still there.

💡

The only way to truly resolve a lice infestation is to physically remove both live lice and every nit from the hair. Killing alone is not enough.

Something Most People Don't Know

The Residue Problem

Product residue left in the hair can actually interfere with professional treatment — and this is something most people don't realize until they arrive for their appointment.

At Jamie's Lice Angels, we use a natural enzyme spray as the first step of treatment. It works by loosening the very strong glue that holds nits to the hair shaft — the same glue that makes at-home treatments fail. If your hair has residue from OTC shampoos, oils, or other products, it can prevent the enzyme from penetrating properly and reduce how well it works.

That's why before coming in, we ask you to do this rinse:

🍎

Apple Cider Vinegar Pre-Rinse

If you have used any over-the-counter lice treatment or home remedy, please do the following before your appointment:

  1. Mix equal parts apple cider vinegar and water
  2. Apply to the hair and let it sit briefly
  3. Follow with your regular shampoo and conditioner
  4. Add detangler if needed
  5. Arrive with dry or damp hair

This removes product buildup so your treatment works at full effectiveness when you arrive.

Before Your Appointment

What NOT to Put in Hair Before Coming In

To protect the effectiveness of your treatment, please do not apply any of the following before your appointment. These products leave residue that is difficult to remove and will reduce how well our enzyme treatment works:

🚫

Vaseline or Petroleum Jelly

Extremely difficult to remove and coats the hair shaft in a way that blocks treatment.

🚫

Mayonnaise

A common home remedy that leaves heavy residue and does not effectively remove nits.

🚫

Olive Oil or Any Oil-Based Remedy

Oil alone does not break the bond between nits and the hair shaft, and residue interferes with our enzyme spray.

🚫

Hair Dye

Hair dye does not kill nits and leaves chemical residue that affects treatment.

🚫

OTC Pesticide Treatments

Products like Nix and Rid leave pesticide residue that interferes with our natural enzyme formula. Use the ACV rinse to remove them first.

The Solution

What Actually Gets Rid of Lice

The most effective approach — especially after a failed round of home treatments — is professional removal. Here's why it's fundamentally different from anything you can do at home:

Our process doesn't just try to kill lice. We physically remove every louse and every nit from the hair. Here's exactly how it works:

Our 3-Part Treatment

1️⃣
Enzyme Spray

We apply our natural, pesticide-free enzyme spray and allow it to saturate the hair. It loosens the very strong glue that holds nits to the hair shaft — the glue that makes at-home treatments fail.

2️⃣
Professional Comb-Out

A meticulous, thorough comb-out using a heavy-duty professional comb. This physically removes both the lice and the loosened nits. We don't just kill — we remove.

3️⃣
Oil Finish

After the comb-out, we apply a special oil to the hair. This suffocates any lice that may have eluded the combing process. You wash it out at home — nothing left behind.

Why OTC Products Don't Compare

Lice Resistance

Lice have built up resistance to the pesticides in most OTC products — so-called "super lice" are increasingly common.

Nits Stay Behind

OTC products don't physically remove nits. Eggs hatch within 8–9 days and the infestation starts again.

Harmful Chemicals

Repeated exposure to pesticide-based treatments is not safe, especially for young children.

The whole process takes about one hour. One visit. Lice and nits completely removed. Guaranteed.

Your Next Steps

The Bottom Line: Here's Exactly What to Do

If you've mixed lice treatments and aren't sure what to do next, follow these steps in order:

1️⃣

Stop Adding Products

Don't add anything else to the hair. More product means more residue to deal with before treatment.

2️⃣

Do the ACV Rinse

Equal parts apple cider vinegar and water, followed by shampoo, conditioner, and detangler. This clears the way for effective treatment.

3️⃣

Call Us

Same-day appointments may be available. We'll get you in as quickly as we can and handle everything from there.

4️⃣

Tell Your Circle

Let people in close contact with your family know so they can check themselves — this prevents re-infestation after treatment.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does vinegar kill lice or nits?

No. Vinegar does not kill lice or nits. It is sometimes used as a rinse to help loosen nits from the hair shaft, but it is not effective on its own as a lice treatment. It does not replace professional removal.

Does conditioner suffocate lice?

Conditioner can temporarily slow lice down but does not reliably kill them or remove nits. It is not an effective treatment on its own.

Is it safe to mix lice shampoo with other products?

While it hasn't caused harm, mixing products doesn't improve results — and it creates residue in the hair that can interfere with professional treatment. If you've already mixed products, do the apple cider vinegar rinse described above before your appointment.

How soon can I come in after using OTC lice treatment?

You can come in right away as long as you do the apple cider vinegar rinse first to remove product residue. Call us at (586) 323-6080 — same-day appointments may be available.

What if I can't get OTC residue fully out of the hair?

If the residue isn't fully removed when you arrive, we can handle it at the salon for a $25 fee. We'd rather you come in than keep waiting — lice don't get better on their own.
