What to Watch Out For
When considering different lice treatment options, it’s important to keep in mind that not all lice professionals are equal. Some companies may claim to have unique or innovative treatments, but they may not always be effective — or worth the cost. Here are some real examples of what’s out there and why we believe our approach is different.
Treatments That May Not Be What They Seem
The Olive Oil Treatment
Some providers use olive oil-based treatments, claiming that oil loosens nits from the hair shaft. However, this claim is not well-supported, and oil alone does not effectively break the bond between nits and hair.
More importantly, these treatments often require the customer to continue applying oil and combing at home for several weeks after the appointment. If you are doing the work yourself after paying for a professional service, you are not really getting a professional treatment — you are getting a starter kit with guidance.
The Heat Machine Treatment
Another company uses a heat machine that claims to dehydrate nits in the hair, making them non-viable. While they advertise this as highly effective, they still comb the hair afterward to remove any remaining nits “just in case” — which suggests the heat alone isn’t fully reliable.
After the appointment, the customer is sent home with instructions to apply oil — again leaving part of the treatment in your hands. It’s also worth knowing that this company has to rent the machine from its inventor, a cost that is passed directly on to you in the form of higher prices.
The Incomplete Treatment
Some providers focus only on killing live lice but don’t thoroughly remove nits from the hair. Since nits hatch within 8–9 days, an infestation that appears to be treated can return quickly — leading to repeat visits and additional expense.
A truly effective lice treatment must address both live lice and nits. Without complete nit removal, the problem isn’t solved — it’s just delayed.
Questions to Ask Any Lice Professional Before Booking
Before committing to any lice treatment provider, ask these questions. The answers will tell you a lot about whether their treatment is truly effective.
Do you physically remove all nits from the hair, or do you only kill them?
Does your treatment use pesticides or harsh chemicals?
Will I need to continue the treatment at home after my appointment?
Do you have verified reviews on Google or the BBB?
Is your treatment safe for toddlers and young children?
Check Google Reviews, the Better Business Bureau (BBB), and Yelp before booking with any lice treatment provider. Look for a company with a proven track record of success and a large number of verified, positive reviews from real customers.
